What's New?

Things here are good.  Gracie is continuing to amaze me daily with her language skills.  Now when I call her name she calls back What Mumma?  This morning I asked her where her cup was and she said in da kitchin.  When she couldn't find it in the kitchen she ran around yelling Milk, where are you?  The other morning I was running around like a crazy woman getting ready for work and she said hey mum, you pay me pease?  She's never asked me to play with her before.  She might bring me a toy to indicate she wants to play but she never said it before.  When I tell her I'm leaving for work she says oh, mumma wok, mumma go car.  Car room room room.  I literally come home to something new every day which is fun.

We went back to the nutritionist a couple of weeks ago and I'm happy to say that she has started gaining again.  She was up over a pound from the previous visit so that was good.  I also met with the GI doctor who was happy with the progress but also always seems to want to remind me of the worst case scenarios if she were to back slide.  One of those is a night time feeding tube.  I very calmly told him that I consider that to be an absolute last resort and unless I have a child who is in medical distress, is losing weight and not meeting her developmental goals, I don't consider that something we need to discuss right now.  He said oh, no, no, I wouldn't do that now.  I said well, I'm glad we're on the same page.  I appreciate him being cautious but she's not unhealthy.  She's long and lean.  It's who she is.  And I'm proud of myself for finally speaking up in a very, very clear manner.  She is back on the appetite stimulant which I think is clear that she still needed.  She is definitely eating better but she will still take longer to catch up weight wise but everything else is going really well.  She is officially out of all of her 12 month clothes because they are too short.  18 months are roomy but we need them for the length so I just roll over the waist if I need to.

Last month we took a trip to Ohio for a baby shower and to visit friends.  It was a great trip.  The plane ride there wasn't so much fun.  It started when my sister dropped us off at the airport.  I got out of the car to get Grace out of her seat and she thought that meant I was leaving her and she broke into hysterics.  Then she turned into a screaming mess.  I dropped the bag off to be checked and she just sat in her stroller screaming.  We had dinner and the restaurant didn't have crayons so that made her scream.  I let her walk as much as I could and that seemed to help but then when I needed to carry her down the walk way, because I wasn't going to hold up a plane full of people for a slow walking almost two year old, she screamed.  Good times.  I did spend the extra money to upgrade to business class and that was a good idea since we had a bigger seat with more leg room.  However, after 5 minutes on the plane she looks at me and says mumma, I down.  We hadn't even taxied from the gate yet.  Then she told me mumma, I my seat.  Yeah, well, sorry sweetie, mommy is your seat.  It was a rough ride and she finally fell asleep about 30 minutes before we landed.  But the weekend itself was great.  We had a lot of time to hang out and relax at Auntie Andrea's and we met their new puppy Tucker.  Gracie was terrified and infatuated all at the same time.  The baby shower was fun and it was in a church hall that happened to have a nursery off of it so Grace was able to play with the toys while I stood in the door way and saw all the great things that Robin received.  Then Sunday we had brunch with Robin and Ben.  Such a fun weekend.  And then two weeks later baby Noah made his entrance early but he was over 7 pounds and he is a cutie!  We can't wait to go back and meet him in person.  The ride home was far more pleasant with very little screaming.

So I discovered last weekend that I really need to change our weekend schedule.  I have been using Saturdays to get all of our errands done and Grace showed me that she can't really handle that.  Even though we come home for a nap, it was too much and our weekends were becoming difficult.  So now I know that I have to figure out different options.  It doesn't mean we stay home all day, it just means we pick one or two things and that's it.  That also means that I have to be smarter about getting the rest of the things done.  Maybe I should actually take a lunch hour and do some things then.  I also need to start doing things like grocery shopping after she goes to bed.  I have an unusually great living set up.  My sister and brother-in-law live upstairs so they're happy to take the baby monitor and listen for her if I have to run out.  We have a split level house so I just open the door from my house to theirs and give them the baby monitor.  Anyway, we started this weekend and while we had one issue yesterday while buying a birthday present, in general I think it's working much better for her.  She had more time at home to play and was generally much happier and so was I.

Well, that's about all I've got but here are a few recent pictures.

What's New

So I thought I would give a little update on how things are with us.  Gracie went back to the nutritionist early this month and as I suspected, she didn't gain any weight from the appointment in November.  I think it was a couple of factors.  1.  She went off the appetite enhancement 2. She is a picky toddler 3. She had a couple more teeth coming in.  So we put her back on the appetite supplement and her eating has definitely improved.  We're also hoping to move her to pediasure 1.5 which has more calories than the regular pediasure.  I actually handled it well since I had prepared for it and I also felt we had a small breakthrough.  The nutritionist finally conceded for the first time that "well, she might just be long and lean".  I said, yes, that's the point I've been trying to make and left it at that.  She's healthy, she's eating and she's growing so that's really all I'm focusing on now.

Her language is absolutely exploding.  I came home from work last week and asked her how she was and she said Mumma I happy girl! Her new favorite phrase is "No, No Way!"  I asked her if she wanted an egg and she said no egg, I want waffle.  It seems like she has several new words a day.  She was re-evaluated last week by early intervention and she no longer qualifies for services.  She has totally caught up developmentally in a years time.  I'm so proud of her.

We're also making progress on behavior.  She's actually really good but she has been going through this screaming phase.  I went with a zero screaming policy and put her in time out with no warning  for every single scream.  The first day we had over 40 but by the end of the week she was down to 3.  It has also been much better in restaurants.  I'll tell you that while it's really hard to be on her every time, the consistency has really paid off.  I'm also lucky that she stays with my sister during the day and she has been re-enforcing the rules so that has helped enormously.

Grace loves, loves, loves to sing.  Last weekend she was supposed to be taking a nap.  I went over by her room to put something away and all of a sudden I heard "Hey dol ditta, heeeeeeeeeeey, heeeeeeeeeeeeey, heeeeeeeeeey".  Yup, she was singing Hey Soul Sister by Train.  I sing it to her a lot because she likes the beat but I didn't realize she knew the tune.  She also sings Baby by Justin Bieber.  If I am on the computer she will come running up and say 'I want O Baby O please".  Then we watch it on YouTube and she rocks out.  Her dancing is hysterical.  She has a lot of shoulder action which is definitely reminiscent of the little bit of Ethiopian dancing I have seen.  She's just so much fun.

This weekend we're headed off to Ohio for my friend Robin's baby shower.  Robin and her husband haven't met Grace yet so I'm excited for the introduction.  We're also looking forward to staying with Auntie Andrea and Uncle Rob.  Should be a fast but fun weekend.

And now for the real reason you came to my blog.......the pictures!

Snow Day!

So today we got a foot and a half of snow.  The up side is that I got a snow day since my employer told us yesterday that we were closing today.  I was so happy to have an extra day with Grace and she had a brand spanking new snow suit to break in so we spent some time outside.  She absolutely loved every minute of it.  Her hands are so small that I can't really find gloves that fit them so her gloves kept falling off.  But she had a blast and was furious when I brought her in because it was too cold.  The down side is that the snow blower chose today to break down so Mommy did a lot of shoveling along with Auntie Kate and Uncle Dennis.

The Year in Review and the the Year Ahead

It's hard to believe that I have passed the one year mark as a mother.  It's hard to believe all the things that have happened in just a short time.  I do know that even with the struggles, and yeah, we have struggles, it's so much better having Grace in my life.

So 2010 began with a bang.  We had been home from Ethiopia less than a month, had Christmas, she met all of her extended family, we had a jillion doctor appointments and I went back to work in February. At the time I thought I handled it OK but looking back now I can see I was more frazzled than I admitted to myself.  Being a new mother is scary.  They don't come with a manual and you can buy lots of books like what to expect when you're expecting and what to expect in the first year, but really, they don't help so much when you're starting off with an 8 month old.   I imagine it's similar to being at boot camp.  You're totally turning your life over to someone else, you don't really know them too well and it's a long term commitment.  I was petrified that I wouldn't be able to learn her fast enough and that 2 1/2 months of maternity leave would never be enough for her to know the difference between who was her mommy and who was her care taker.  But it was.  She knew the difference way before I went back to work and she hasn't really had too much confusion.  She knows that Auntie Kate is the go to person during the day but the second mommy walks in the door, it's me that she turns to for comfort, for dinner, for hugs and discipline, thoughtshe doesn't quite care for that part.    She went from being a baby who could barely hold her head up to to a walking, talking, running machine.  She talks in 3-4 word sentences and every day she has something new to say.  She loves to talk on the phone but she still doesn't recognize that we don't have video phones so the person on the other line can't see her shake her head yes.  She points to pictures and identifies family members by name, even ones she doesn't see regularly.  I'm very proud of that because I want her to be close to family even if they live across the country.  She will often hand me the phone and say I talk.  When I ask to whom she wants to speak to it's usually my sister Amy in California or my parents but the other day she wanted to talk to Diego from Go Diego Go!  Her imagination is really amazing to me.  The other day she picked up a gift bag and told me it was her back pack and asked me to put it on her.  She has played with that bag every day since.  Today she woke up and asked for it.  When she had it on yesterday she walked over to the door and said Mumma, I bye-bye, waived at me.  Then she turned around and went on some sort of adventure that led her back to the other side of the living room.  Took her about 20 minutes( our living room's not that big), because she had to stop and talk to the food in her toy shopping cart, had to find the perfect book to read on the journey, and needed to admire the Christmas tree for the 932nd time.  While she stands at the tree she says, Oooohhhhhh, nice tree! No touch, No touch!  She has gotten a lot better at picking up and following basic directions and she is fantastic at independent play.  She has a fisher price nativity set that she plays with constantly and it's fascinating to watch her act out the little scenes though I have no idea what they are.  She is also becoming far more opinionated.  Sometimes I pull out an outfit and she looks at me like I've pulled out something crazy and says no, no, no, no NO!  It sure was simpler to dress her a couple of months ago but it's fun to get a sense of what she likes.  Though I did learn quickly that it could take her all morning if I really let her choose.  Now I pull out two outfits and she can pick.  She is also obsessed with these pink timberland boots that she inherited from her cousin Meghan.  The second I start dressing her she says, Mumma, my booooootttttttsssss.  My Boooooooottttttsssss.  While she still isn't a great eater, she does eat and she has started to ask for foods by name instead of just saying she wants to eat.  Some of her current favorites are apple-deedee (apple sauce) banya banya (banana's) aireeos (oreos) teeditz (cheezits) and my personal favorite, pup porn (popcorn).  I love when she asks for a snack and I say, Gracie, what would you like and she says Hmmmmmmmm, My no no Mumma.  It's adorable.  Today I didn't act fast enough when asked for a banya banya so I was treated to the banya banya dance, which was Gracie dancing around in a circle calling out banya banya at different decibels.  This morning I let her stay in her crib 10 extra minutes so I could hear her singing along to her Glow-Ya (Glow-Worm).  It was precious.  Such a good way to start the day off.  She will be re-evaluated at the end of this month by early intervention but they don't expect her to qualify any longer for services.  So much progress in one year and I am so proud of her.  So proud of us.  We've figured out how to be our own little family and we have bumps along the way but we manage, and we move forward and we love each other harder the next day.  It exhausting being a  parent.  I've never had a job I loved so much that made me feel so stupid, smart, intuitive, clueless, grateful, overwhelmed, panicked and at ease all at the same time, often all in the same day!

So for the year ahead I see two major challenges with Grace.  First, we still have the issue of her weight.  She is almost 21 months and she is not 19 pounds yet.  I think the issue at hand it not really what her weight is but how I react to it.  I try not to let it bother me when people tell me how small she is.  Honestly, it's a valid observation but it bristles me because I don't receive it as an observation.  I receive it as a criticism though it's not meant that way and I KNOW IT!  In the next year I need to remind myself of a couple of factors.  1.  She is not gaining at the rate I expected her to but she is gaining.  2.  She is absolutely developmentally appropriate for her age.  She is thriving, she is smart, she is doing well and I need to be proud of all that she is and worry less about what she isn't.  3.  It's OK for me to disagree with her GI doctor and her nutritionist.  First let me say that I do respect their opinions, and I am very grateful I have them to help guide me and to help get her caught up.  But truth be told, I stress out every time we have an appointment.  Like big time stress out.  I can't sleep the night or two before the appointment, I'm anxious, I'm defensive.  It makes me crazy and if I can't control my feelings it could start to effect Grace and I don't want her to have food issues or an unhealthy body image.  I appreciate their attentiveness but there is a part of me that just wants to say, OK, she isn't gaining as quickly as we would like, but she is gaining, she is growing in height and head circumference, she is developmentally appropriate, she is making all the milestones, I am doing everything I can to get more calories in and there seem to be no medical issues that are impeding her ability to gain so  maybe, she's just going to be petite and really, is that the end of the world?  And you know what? I think this year I need to get the courage to say that and with conviction.  I am in no way trying to minimize the effect of malnourishment and how important it is to get her caught up as quickly as we can but at the same time, she's a finicky toddler and sometimes she loves stuff and sometimes she doesn't.  She went through months of refusing apple sauce after having loved it previously and now it's back at the top of her hit parade.  Sometimes she likes something in the morning but by late in the afternoon, not so much.  I just need to take my feelings out of the equation.  If you have any suggestions, I'd certainly like to hear them.

The other issue we have to work on this year is the high pitched shriek that she lets out about every 20 seconds.  It's deafening and it's not an indication of being on fire, or run over by her cousin Jake in a race for a toy.  It's. just. because. she. can.  It's wearing me out.  It could be in response to her asking for something that she can't have.  For example, if she asks me nicely for help but that help is so that she can climb on the chair to have a better angle to take the ornaments off the Christmas tree and toss them, the answer will always be a polite no so that now requires the scream.  Or perhaps it's that I pick up the brown crayon and she wanted me to take the orange one.  Or maybe we're walking in target and she is singing a song while we're walking down an aisle and she just decides this would be a fun time to scream.  There really is no rhyme or reason but it's exhausting and embarrassing all the same.  I hear the people who whisper "why doesn't she quiet that kid down".  You know, what?  I used to be one of those people.  I may not have said it out loud but I certainly thought it.  But you know what, I really had no idea that the will of an almost 2 year old is harder to tame than a wild wildebeest.  The one thing I can say is that I am consistent.  I have walked out of restaurants (three last week alone), I have done and continue to do the time outs.  I am nothing if not consistent.  It hasn't been working so well but I am going to keep at it.  As of yesterday we started a zero screaming tolerance policy in our house.  She gets no warning and she goes directly into a one minute time out in her room on her little princess chair.  She doesn't like it but she does her time.  A couple of times I've said, are you ready to stop screaming and she will say no, and start all over again and then I leave her there for another minute.  She is feisty and she has a bit of temper but she needs the down time even if it's just for a minute.  Yesterday she screamed in Target and I found a small spot for her to sit on out of the way near a crib display.  The look on her face was pretty comical.  It said, really, lady, even here at Target you give me a time out?  If we didn't really, really, really need the diaper genie liners I would have just left the store with her but I need to teach her that choices have consequences and that screaming like a banshee is a choice.  I know this is typical of children her age and I am not the first parent to encounter it but it's a real challenge.  I am so over this phase but sadly, she is not.  But again, I need to have more patience when dealing with it and continue to guide her with age appropriate consequences.  But man, it wears me out.  It would be really nice to have a husband to tag team this with but alas. I go it alone.

So my wishes for the new year are more patience, more confidence to stand up for myself and my daughter, more laughter, more kisses, more pat-pats on the shoulder and snuggles and songs and love.  To learn that it's OK to take a break from being a mommy even when I'm not with her from 9-5.  To learn to accept more of the help that has been offered.  It's intensely consuming being a single parent.  No one but me expects that I can or should handle it all. A couple of hours a month to myself (thanks to the grandparents) will allow me to retain my sanity, have a couple of hot lattes, and maybe even see an occasional movie.  It will be good for me, and good for Gracie.  I'll let you know how it works out.

I hope your last year was happy and your year ahead is filled with love and laughter.

Where Does The TIme Go

It feels like I just finished writing a post but as it turns out, it's been two weeks.  Things with us are busy but good.  I can't remember a Christmas season that I have enjoyed more or embraced more enthusiastically than this one.  I decided that every weekend between Thanksgiving and Christmas we would do at least on christmasy thing and I am happy to report that I met my goal.  It began with Thanksgiving weekend when we went to a Christmas tree festival put on in a local town with proceeds going to the town's historical society.  It was held inside an office park and there were hundreds of trees decorated by local businesses and schools and each had a different theme and you could buy raffle tickets to try to win one.  Sadly, we didn't win but it was an awful lot of fun.  The second weekend we went with my parents to the enchanted village.  When I was a kid one of the department stores in Boston had this set up every year and it was a must see for our family.  The department store got sold and eventually the display was sold to the city of Boston but they stopped displaying it due to budget cuts.  Last year a large furniture chain in our area bought it and refurbished it and it brought back so many happy memories.  The best part is that it was free.  They also had fake snow that sprayed every few minutes and that was by far Grace's favorite part.  Weekend three was going to our local zoo for their annual Christmas lights display.  The culmination of our holiday weekend frivolities was yesterday.  Family friends live in a town that has a small Christmas parade.  It's mostly fire trucks and large trucks with Christmas lights on them but they throw candies and beads for the kids to pick up.  Grace LOVED this.  She kept waving to all the trucks and was yelling and laughing.  It was so much fun to watch her.

So I'm happy to report that all my Christmas shopping is done, packages are wrapped and boxes that needed to be shipped were mailed.  I'm on a roll.  After Wednesday I will be off until January 3rd and I am REALLY looking forward to the extra time with Grace.  We have some fun visits with family and friends planned but we also have lots of down time which I know we both can use.

I am really looking forward to Christmas.  Last year we were both in a bit of a fog as we had only been home a couple of weeks.  Last year Grace was only 8 months old and she liked the wrapping paper better than the presents.  I'm hoping that this year she'll be a little more interested in the presents.  Can't wait to see what Santa brings her but rest assured that there will be pictures.  I had been having camera problems as my camera decided that the batteries should be changed after every 30 pictures.  As luck would have it, my brother-in-law won a new camera at his work Christmas party and since they didn't need it, they gave it to me.  Yes, I'm lucky and yes, he is very generous.

I can't help but feel especially grateful this time of year for all that I do have.  I can often get caught up in the things that don't go smoothly in life but when it comes down to it I am blessed.  Blessed to have two amazing sisters who are my very best friends and who are two of the best mothers I have ever come across.  Blessed to have the sweetest nieces and nephews who I love like my own children.  Blessed to have had a wonderful mother who ingrained so many things in me and taught me lessons that I didn't know were lessons at the time.  I miss her every day but am grateful for the time I had with  her.  Blessed to have my daddy and my step-mom Judi.  Such great supports and fabulous grandparents who Grace adores.  Blessed to have two of the best brother-in-laws that a gal could ask for.  Either one of them would drop anything for Grace and I if we needed them.  Blessed to have a family of friends that have embraced Grace and I and have loved us with everything they have.  And we love them the same way.  Blessed to have a comfortable little home and enough to cover our needs and a little of our wants.  Blessed to be the mother of the delightful little girl who sleeps in the bedroom next to mine.  She greets me every morning with a smile that says, hey mommy, glad to see you, I've been waiting to see you! I am so lucky to have her in my life and so lucky to have her to love.
